While Facebook and Google control the majority of the social networking scene,LinkedIn offers an unparalleled social networking experience for professionals. The service provides a platform that more than 120 million professionals use to connect with colleagues, coworkers, and superiors to form business networks and discover job opportunities.

LinkedIn has launched major updates for its iPhone and Android apps, along with a web app designed specifically for HTML5 compatible phones. While LinkedIn’s older mobile website is still active at m.linkedin.com, it’s ugly and difficult to navigate in comparison to the new web app. Touch.linkedin.com, on the other hand, offers many of the features found in the native app.

All three apps  let users view network updates, access messages, modify their profile, and interact with Groups. Group based interaction on the go wasn’t available up until recently.

LinkedIn says the all three mobile apps are the strongest growing portion of the business. The official LinkedIn iOS application is available from the App Store free of charge.

OTTAWA—Technology patent house Wi-LAN Inc. says it will make a $480-million cash takeover bid for Mosaid Technologies Inc.

Wi-LAN says it wants to buy the competing patent company to better compete in more global technology markets.

The company says it will pay $38 in cash for all of the outstanding common shares of Mosaid, a premium of about 31 per cent over the closing price of Mosaid shares.

Wi-LAN says combining the two companies, both located in Ottawa, will make it easier to grow in the global patent licensing business.

Wi-LAN primarily collects licensing fees from companies that use technologies covered by its portfolio of patents.

Mosaid develops semiconductor memory technology and licenses patented intellectual property in the areas of semiconductors and telecommunications systems.
